Hidden treasure

I was reading Matthew 13:44 today and was struck by something that I hadn't really considered before.

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field" (NLT).

I can understand the idea of hiding something until I have the money to buy it. More than one woman has moved an item to the back of the rack or shelf until she can come back and hopefully find it there. Especially those one of a kind items. But here is what I saw today:

"In his excitement, he hid it again..."

It occurred to me today that sometimes we find that treasure and then we leave it hidden. I doubt very much that the man in Matthew bought the field and then left the treasure there to gloat over. Considering that he'd sold everything to buy it, he'd probably need a little ready cash. Besides, the Bible clearly says he was excited about it!

But do we sometimes hoard our treasure? It can be unnerving to share Christ with people that we think will be skeptical or just might think we sound weird. We sometimes don't say anything because we assume they won't be interested. Or, even worse, maybe, we assume they know - that they've heard about salvation and have already settled things with God. So we sit contentedly with our promise of an eternal kingdom and leave it hidden from view.

It's a treasure that can be shared. The price was invaluable and is more than others can afford to pay. So don't hide it. Let them know that this treasure can be theirs, too.

Consider the ant

We have an annual problem at our house. Tiny little black ants will find their way into our house through openings I can't even see. It's a real day wrecker to hear someone call "There's ants in here!" It can be any room in the house but when they find food, watch out! One ant will become a hundred ants in no time at all. And after several times emptying the pantry and throwing out food they'd found there way into, I've had it with the ants.

Last night, I was reading my Bible and came across this verse:

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
Learn from their ways and become wise!

Proverbs 6:6 (NLT)

Ants! Here, too! My first reaction to the lesson of the ants was not a positive one. I wouldn't consider being like an ant an example of wisdom. Persistence, perhaps (can you say an ant is pig-headed?); obnoxiousness, certainly; troublesome, you bet. At this time of year, they are more a picture of sin than wisdom to me. One bad habit, one little concession, one relaxing of the limits and before you know it, there's a lot more sin to be dealt with. And the longer you take to deal with it, the bigger the problem is.

So I suppose I can take a lesson from the ants today after all. The best way to avoid being over run is to deal with it as soon as you notice one.

Maybe I'll have to look at that passage again in October when they've slowed down again...
