"Immanuel or Emmanuel or Imanu'el (עִמָּנוּאֵל "God [is] with us" consists of two Hebrew words: אל (El, meaning 'God') and עמנו (Immanu, meaning 'with us')"
(definition taken from Wikipedia)
There are many names and titles given to Jesus. Some are prophetic, some descriptive and some symbolic. Over 100 names throughout the Bible refer to him and they all reveal a unique aspect of his personality or role throughout history and in our present lives, too.
One of my favorite names, particularly at this time of year, is Immanuel - "God With Us." How reassuring, how victorious, how humbling that thought is! And yet it sums up the whole of Christ's purpose in being born to this world. He stepped across the void that separated us from God so that God could once again be "with us". I found a very good reminder of why this had to be at http://www.orlutheran.com/html/immanuel.html if you want to think more about it.
But it also begs a question this Christmas Day -
Now that he's with us, what will you do with him?
